We are immensely grateful for the support that we receive through private donations at all levels, which support the Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) for Young African Leaders at the University of Notre Dame.
Giving to the fellowship program is an opportunity to help the Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development (NDIGD) help impart these fellows with new knowledge, skills, mentors, and other resources to accelerate their own career trajectories. Through your support, we are helping strengthen Africa’s next generation of leaders who, through their experience in the MWF, are better prepared than ever to robustly contribute to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security across the continent and beyond.

On behalf of past and future Mandela Washington fellows, we thank you for your generous support.
Become a Mandela Washington Fellowship Host Family
Another way to support the MWF is by opening up your home to a small group of fellows during their time here as a host family. Each year, we seek local Michiana families interested in meeting with the fellows for fun, hospitality, cultural exchange, conversation, and a shared meal.
Over the course of two separate Saturday afternoons and/or evenings (one in late June, the other in mid-July), host families provide unique opportunities for fellows to get introduced to American (and Hoosier) culture. In the past, some families have simply opened their home and shared a good meal, while others have introduced their fellows to their friends, families, and neighbors, while still others have taken their fellows to different places of interest in the community like a fair or one of the beaches on Lake Michigan. Host families can choose to only host one of the Saturdays, or both.
This is one of the most beloved components of the program for both the host families and the fellows, as it provides a unique opportunity for the fellows to get introduced to American culture while also sharing their own.
NDIGD welcomes families of all sizes and backgrounds to apply to become a host family. All we ask is that you complete an application form (available below), attend an orientation meeting where you'll meet the fellows, and pick up and drop off your 2-3 fellows on the Saturday(s) you are hosting them.
We are especially grateful for the following corporate and foundation partners who have generously provided additional funding and technical support for the MWF over the years. Their generosity has contributed enormously toward making the MWF a success at Notre Dame:
